João Pernambuco, a genius of the Brazilian guitar

I've not posted for a long time, and I'm hoping to post a bit more regularly from now on. I've been enjoying lots of marvellous music on YouTube, and I'll be sharing some of that.

First off, a bit of a personal preoccupation. I love the guitar, both as player and listener, and for me one of the highlights of guitar music is that of the Brazilian genius João Teixeira Guimarães (a.k.a. Pernambuco). He was active in the early decades of the twentieth century, composing and recording guitar music in various styles then current in Brazil. His colorful, rhythmic compositions, praised highly by no less than Villa Lobos, have become classics of Brazilian music.

Here are some of my favorite solo performances of his music on YouTube:

Interrogando
Grauna
Brasileirinho
Pó de mico

Here's a very nice album of group arrangements of his music:
João Pernambuco - Antônio Adolfo ao piano e 'Nó Em Pingo D'Água'

Finally, here's a recording of the master himself (with 2nd guitar as accompaniment):

Rosa Carioca

Enjoy!
